The Jazz won’t know how to proceed until they know if Horton-Tucker and Clarkson will be on the roster. Like Hendricks and Sensabaugh, George is a relative unknown as to what he’s capable of bringing at this point. Sexton, with the landscape of the frontcourt, is probably more important to the Jazz than he was before the Collins trade, because Utah needs his ability to create and bring rim pressure off the dribble and score off the bench. If the roster doesn’t change, Agbaji projects as the starting shooting guard, and Sexton projects as a sixth man or first guard off the bench. Agbaji and Collin Sexton seem to be the closest to having definitive roles. Kris Dunn has a non-guaranteed contract for next season, but league sources say he’s currently in Utah’s plans for next season. Jordan Clarkson and Talen Horton-Tucker both have player options for next season, and there hasn’t been a decision yet from either player. The backcourt for the Jazz is far less settled. Hendricks, Damian Jones, who just opted in to the final year of his deal, Fontecchio, Šamanić and Sensabaugh are probably going to battle to find roles. Markkanen, Kessler, Collins and Olynyk are in line to play major minutes.
Still, Utah’s frontcourt, if it stays largely the way it currently looks, has some clearly defined roles. But, if Sensabaugh comes in and plays, defends and shoots it well enough, he could actually put himself in line for a few minutes in some lineups. But neither played well enough collectively to pencil themselves in for automatic minutes.Īgbaji can certainly start games at shooting guard and then stagger with the second unit as a backup small forward. Fontecchio had his moments last season, as did Luka Šamanić. This could create a path for Sensabaugh to potentially find a role in Will Hardy’s rotation, if Sensabaugh plays well enough. It’s ironic that, as of Tuesday, the Jazz probably have minutes available for a backup small forward, if one can emerge. Collins can play power forward and center. Olynyk can do the same on offense and can guard power forwards and centers. Markkanen is capable of playing all three frontcourt spots.

Heading into free agency, what would Utah’s frontcourt need? One of its big advantages is the aforementioned versatility, which could lead to a bunch of interesting combinations. Hendricks will have to earn his minutes, so his perspective playing time is likely contingent on how he shows in training camp. Kelly Olynyk, last year’s starting power forward, likely becomes the first big off the bench.

If that is indeed the trio, Utah has a frontcourt full of length and athleticism coupled with offensive and defensive versatility.
